Members of the CJI drug arrest diversion circle, also known as “Starving the Beast” (STB) have been invited to the 12th National Harm Reduction Conference and a pre-conference event, Black Harm Reduction: Infusing Racial Justice and Harm Reduction into Growing Calls for Reform. Here, we will hear discussions of harm reduction strategies as they pertain to those of African descent.
Political Education is a hallmark of CJI, and in our experience, the sessions go deep. We want to build and learn throughout the conference so we can work from a foundation of shared knowledge and trust, to drill down to the complex work of movement building. The session will address practical steps to working together given the needs and obstacles faced by various marginalized communities, while cultivating shared values to which participants can hold themselves and one another accountable. The NOLA experience will culminate with a day of political education for our participants to share lessons and tactics, and to increase the number of black-led drug diversion/harm reduction organizations that apply to and are funded by the STB Circle.
